A Path Distinct from Decree
Naturalization by decree relies on the administration's discretionary decision. The marriage path takes the form of a declaration: a legal act by which the foreign spouse affirms they meet the conditions to acquire French nationality. It is a more structured procedure, but it still demands a rigorous file.
Conditions to Meet
The marriage must be stable, effective, and celebrated for a certain length of time. Shared life — emotional and material — must be demonstrated. The French spouse must retain French nationality at the moment of declaration. The applicant must show sufficient French language skills and adhere to the essential values of the Republic.
Building the File
The file combines personal documents, proof of marriage (marriage certificate, family record book, evidence of shared life) and proof of integration. Joint tax filings, shared bills, statements from close ones substantiate the shared life. The more coherent and documented the file, the smoother the process.
What Can Trigger Opposition
The government has a window to oppose the declaration, particularly in cases of lack of assimilation, unworthiness, or marriages of convenience. An inquiry may take place. The procedure thus demands transparency and preparation. If the declaration is validated, French nationality is acquired as of the date of declaration.
