The TCF Level Scale

The TCF assesses your skills on a 6-level scale aligned with the CEFR: A1 (elementary), A2, B1 (intermediate), B2, C1 (advanced) and C2. Each level corresponds to a precise numerical score, from 100 to 699 points for mandatory sections.

Reading Your Results Certificate

The certificate details your score for each assessed skill. An overall level is assigned for mandatory sections. Optional sections (oral and written expression) each receive a separate level. The certificate is valid for two years from the test date.

Using Your Results for Immigration

For a resident card in France, present a certificate showing B1 level. For naturalization, B1 oral is required. For Canada, scores are converted to CLB. Keep your original certificate safe: the prefecture or embassy may request the original document.

What If Your Score Is Insufficient?

You can retake the TCF as many times as needed, with a minimum 30-day gap between sessions. Use this time to strengthen the skills where you scored lowest.
