Two Tests, One Goal
The TCF and TEF are the two main French language tests recognized for immigration purposes. They assess the same skills but differ in format, certifying body and testing conditions.
The TCF at a Glance
Administered by France Éducation International, the TCF is a standardized test with multiple-choice questions. Available versions: TCF IRN, TCF Canada, TCF general. Duration: approximately 2.5 hours.
The TEF at a Glance
Designed by the Paris Chamber of Commerce (CCI Paris), the TEF evaluates five competencies. Available versions: TEF, TEF Canada, TEF Naturalization, TEF Resident Card. Duration: approximately 3.5 hours.
How to Choose?
For French nationality, both TCF IRN and TEF Naturalization are accepted. For Canada, TCF Canada and TEF Canada are recognized by IRCC. The TCF is often seen as more accessible due to its multiple-choice format, while the TEF requires more personal production. Check local availability before registering.
