What Is TEF IRN?

TEF IRN (Test d'évaluation de français — Integration, Residence, Nationality) is issued by CCI Paris Île-de-France. It was designed specifically for integration, residence and nationality procedures in France, and it is accepted on the same footing as TCF IRN by prefectures and relevant ministries. Its purpose: offering an official alternative for candidates who find a TEF center available sooner or closer than TCF centers.

The Four Parts Explained

TEF IRN assesses four skills. Listening (about 40 minutes) is based on varied audio extracts with multiple-choice questions. Reading (about 60 minutes) presents short and longer texts. Writing (60 minutes) requires two guided pieces. Speaking (15 minutes) involves two interactions with an examiner: asking questions based on a situation, then presenting and defending a point of view. The exam is calibrated to assess levels from A1 to C2.

How to Register and How Much It Costs

Registration is done directly with an accredited center: the official list is published on the CCI website. Plan for 130 to 200 euros depending on center and session. Valid ID is mandatory on exam day. Sessions are held multiple times per month in major cities but can be rare in less dense areas: checking availability six to eight weeks ahead is good practice.

Reading the Results

Results are available about three to four weeks after the exam, as a detailed certificate. Each skill receives a score and a CEFR level (A1 to C2). An overall level is computed. As with TCF IRN, the certificate is valid for two years. Make sure every element required by your prefecture (specific skills, minimum level) appears on the certificate before building your file.
